External Evaluation of Study Programmes
An external evaluation of study programmes for the accreditation purposes started in 1999-2000. The evaluation is intended to help higher education institutions to improve constantly their study programmes and to inform the public about the quality of studies. Lithuanian or international* expert teams are recruited to evaluate study programmes.
Higher education institutions may only pursue accredited programs. All the study programmes are accredited at least once every 6 years. On the basis of external evaluation report of the study programme Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education takes decision to accredit study program for 6 years or for 3 years. If the programme evaluation is negative such a programme is not being accredited.
The quality of a study programme is assested by 6 evaluation areas program aims and learning outcomes, curriculum design, staff, material resources, study process and assessment, programme management. Every evaluation area is assessed in 4 point scale. Taking into account the assessment of each evaluation area and the total amount of points the evaluated study programme is being accredited according to Procedure for the evaluation and accreditation of study programmes (available in Lithuanian).
The programme is accredited for 6 years if the assessment of the study programme consist of at least 18 points and none of the area was evaluated as "unsatisfactory" (1 point) or "satisfactory" (2 points) and the study programme meets the requirements for study programmes confirmed by the Ministry of Education and Science.
The programme is accredited for 3 years if the assessment of the study programme consist of at least 12 points and none of the area was evaluated as "unsatisfactory" (1 point) and the study programme meets the requirements for study programmes confirmed by the Ministry of Education and Science.
The programme is not accredited if the assessment of the study programme consist of less than 12 points or at least one of the area was evaluated as "unsatisfactory" (1 point) or the study programme does not meet the requirements for study programmes confirmed by the Ministry of Education and Science.
