Fair recognition of higher education qualifications, periods of study and prior learning, including recognition of non-formal and informal learning, are essential components of the EHEA, both internally and in a global context.
Applicants can have their foreign qualifications compared with Lithuanian qualifications in two ways depending on the reason they need the recognition for.
Academic recognition is the recognition of a foreign qualification for the purpose of further studies. Academic recognition is carried out on the basis of the academic assessment of qualifications. In this case the assessors determine whether foreign qualifications are comparable to the secondary or higher education qualifications conferred in the Republic of Lithuania.
Professional recognition is the recognition of a foreign qualification for the purpose of work. In this case recognition is sought to assess whether the applicants knowledge, abilities and skills accord with particular profession. In most cases academic assessment is not necessary, yet desirable and treated as a part of professional recognition. In particular cases academic assessment of qualifications is necessary for professional recognition.
