School education
Education in "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" is a three-tier system (primary, secondary and tertiary or higher education levels) and is based on the principle of promoting the full development of the individual personality, thereby aiming to enchance an individual’s personal rights and basic reform.
At the age of 7 or 8 children advance to the primary stage which lasts until they are around 15 years of age. Then children move into the secondary stage which is itself split into various streams: higher education, vocational training, art school, other vocational programmes, and an education stream.
Higher education
A university embodies the ultimate autonomous higher education, scientific i.e. entity, comprised of higher education institutions established trough a legal act.
In accordance with the effective Directed Education Act, the following higher education institutions exit within the higher education system:
Schools as entities the higher education of personnel over a time span of 4 to 6 years, as well as post-graduate studies and diplomas and degrees up to a doctorate level;
Colleges of further education – offering higher education courses spanning over 2 years;
Universities – as a consentual alliance of schools and colleges of further education, where common tasks are being executed of higher education and scientific research activities.
There are two universities in Republic of Macedonia: "Ss. Cyril and Metodius University (Skopje), comprised of 23 schools and 2 colleges of further education.
The "Ss. Cyril and Methodius" and "St. Clement of Ohrid" universities are state universities. Their functioning is being financed by the Government of the Republic of Macedonia.
A university represents the ultimate autonomous higher education, scientific and artistic institution – comprised of schools, art schools, colleges of further education aand scientific institutes.
A school represents a higher education institution conducting higher education activities, scientific research and highly skilled labour in one or severel related branches of study or expertise.
Schools and art schools are also to engage in higher education activities in shape of primary degree courses lasting between 4 to 6 years; post-graduate courses up to the doctorate level – as well as in scientific research and artistic work.
A college of further education represents a higher education institution conducting higher education in specific branches of study and highly skilled activity in one or several branches of expertise. Colleges of further education are engage providing primary degree courses lasting between 2 and 4 years, study courses to higher/graduate diplomas and applied studies.
