Access to higher education

Since 1995 a general condition for admission to the first year of undergraduate studies leading to a university degree has been the matura certificate. The examination is taken in three compulsory subjects (mother tongue, mathematics, first foreign language) and two electives. It is carried out by the National Examination Center.

Secondary school leaving certificates issued before 1 June 1995 in general programmes also give access to university programmes.

Students complete a 4-year secondary technical school with a final examination. It consists of the examination in the mother tongue and either mathematics or first foreign language plus two electives. A final secondary school-leaving certificate is a general requirement for admission to undergraduate study programmes leading to a degree of a professional higher education institution. A matura certificate also gives access to professional study programmes.

An additional admission requirement for some university or professional higher education programmes can be a test of special talents or mental and physical aptitudes of candidates, e.g. talent for music or psychological and physical skills. They are defined by respective programmes.

In case of limited admission (numerus clausus), overall achievement in the secondary school and the matura or final exam results are taken into account.

The same admission requirements apply for foreign and Slovene citizens. Nevertheless, there are some additional requirements for foreigners wishing to study in Slovenia. Studies of foreigners are regulated by special Regulations on Studies of Foreigners and Slovene Nationals without Slovene Citizenship in the Republic of Slovenia.

The detailed information on admissiona requirements is availavble at higher education institutions.
